The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy

enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

• First: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

• Second: High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

Who joins Rotary and what are the general qualifications?

Rotarians are business and professional leaders who take an active role in their communities while greatly enriching their personal and professional lives. A Rotary club contains a diverse group of professional leaders from the community that the club serves.

How big is Rotary International? How big is Valley of the Sun?

Rotary International, the world’s first service organization, is made up of over 34,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Each rotary club is different in size. Over the last few years, Valley of the Sun currently typically hovers between 15-25 members. 

What is the Rotary Four Way Test?

One of the world's most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The Four-Way Test. Adopted by Rotary in 1943, the Four-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways. It asks the following four questions:

"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

What are the benefits to becoming a Rotarian?

Membership in a Rotary club offers a number of benefits, including:

• Effecting change within the community.

• Developing leadership skills.

• Gaining an understanding of, and having an impact on, international humanitarian issues.

• Developing relationships and forming bonds with other community and business leaders.

Through Rotary's service programs, a Rotary club can have a significant, postive effect on the

quality of life within its community. More than 1.2 million Rotarians make significant contributions to the quality of life at home and around the globe.

How often do you meet? Is there an attendance requirement?

The Valley of the Sun Rotary (VOTS) Passport Club meets every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 6:00 pm via Zoom. As a new member of the VOTS, we encourage members to attend as many meetings as possible. But we understand life commitments, and accept a members involvement and enthusiasm for personal causes as well, therefore, we require two community events a month as active participation.  These events or activities can be met in a number of ways. As a passport club, members have a passport into Rotary around the world and members are also encouraged to attend meetings at other Rotary clubs.

What is a classification?

Each active member of a Rotary Club is classified in accordance with the member’s business or profession. A classification describes the principal and recognized activity of the firm with which an active member is connected or the member’s principal and recognized business or professional activity.

Are there committees in Rotary? What are the Avenues of Service?

We encourage members to look for ways they can connect into Rotary service. Below are some of the avenues.

• Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of the club.

• Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards.

• Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its surrounding local communities.

• International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace.

• Youth Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities, service projects, and exchange programs.

How much does it cost to be a VOTS Rotarian?

What is the process for applying for membership?

• Submit Membership Application, including short bio about yourself and photo

• Attend two Rotary Club meetings. 

• Obtain approval of Membership Application by GWR Club Board.

• Applicant’s name is submitted to club members as large.

• If no objections are received, membership is approved, applicant pays initiation fee and quarterly dues, and receives an enthusiastic welcome!
