Scholarship Application Process

  • The application process occurs in the winter/spring of each year. A scholarship committee is convened and works through the scholarship proposal and discusses with the Board for approval.

  • Funds are identified by club leaders and are typically the proceeds from club fund-raising activities and/or through the generosity of club members. The amounts of the scholarships vary from year to year and are meant to supplement the high costs of education. The scholarships are “open-ended” with students and families free to decide how the money is spent.

  • Recipients have included students from local high schools destined for community colleges, local universities including Grand Canyon University and ASU and beyond.  One recent recipient currently attends an Ivy League College. Students are pursuing various interests and academic disciplines.

  • Outreach and Marketing targets local high schools in the west Glendale, west Phoenix and Peoria communities.  The program is complementary to other local  Rotary Clubs, who provide scholarships to students attending high schools in central and east Glendale.  We also announce and advertise the scholarship on our GWR website and through our person al networks.

  • Student applicants submit  the following, (typically through a jotform application):

    • Completion of the application forms

    • Letters of reference

    • A copy of transcripts and

    • Completion of structured essay questions based on the concept of service and the 4-way test

  • Once the applications are reviewed and the candidate pool narrowed down, a panel composed of Club members  is convened,  and applicants are interviewed.  The focus of the application and interview process is academic achievement, participation in service and an awareness of ethics and ethical behavior.  The panel then selects the final recipients

  • The process is culminated in a club meeting where students provide a presentation to the club based on the application and their essay responses. Student are then recognized, families are honored and scholarships distributed along with a certificate of recognition and a 4 – way test coin.  Former recipients are invited and often participate in the Club meeting! And of course plenty of pictures are taken!
